The seemingly constant barrage of rain for the past week or so has meant ground conditions have been more akin to the type we get in the autumn rather than June.
I believe it had an effect on the action at Royal Ascot on Wednesday, when quite a few horses appeared not to act in the softening conditions.
I have a couple of selections from the Royal Meeting for you on Thursday and a couple from Chelmsford.
This horse has won his past two starts and importantly they were on easy ground.
His penultimate win at the Curragh is particularly noteworthy for the fact that he beat the subsequent Coventry winner Arizona. He was impressive last time out at Tipperary when thrashing his field by seven lengths in a fast time.
He travelled strongly there and his quickening surge was taking. He can land the Norfolk under conditions that he will handle better than others and rates a decent bet.
Qaysar was quite unlucky at Beverley last time out and remains with handicapping scope and a good degree of potential.
In that Beverley contest he was badly hampered and lost ground and momentum before running on strongly when in the clear. Lightly raced and open to improvement he can go in here.
This filly was unlucky in the Investec Oaks.
She was held up well off the pace before making good headway in the final three furlongs where she fired the fastest sectional in the race.
Add to that the fact that she was hampered, as well, and you have an improving filly who under different circumstances might possibly have won an Oaks.
She will again be ridden with confidence but the Aidan O’Brien team now know that they have a class filly on their hands and under Ryan Moore I think she can be backed with confidence to win the Ribblesdale.
The Britannia can go to what is effectively John Gosden’s second string.
This horse looked like a pattern class performer last time out at Haydock and off a mark of 102 here it is likely that he is well treated.
The relentless surge that he produced at Haydock was most impressive and after two blips his career is now firmly back on track.
Frankie Dettori rides his stablemate, Turgenev, but Robert Havlin rode this horse last time out and on the figures he has outstanding claims.
The ground is a concern but I have had my eye on this horse for a while and am happy to stick with him.
