Baroud pounces late to deny Daryzan

Baroud caused a surprise when striking late to deny the well-backed favourite Daryzan in the Group Two Prix Guillaume d’Ornano at Deauville.
Aidan O’Brien’s French Derby third Montreal made the early running as Francis-Henri Graffard’s 11-10 favourite Daryzan raced on the rail in midfield.
As they turned for home Daryzan was asked for an effort and darted through a gap on the inside but it was the Andre and Lavinia Fabre-trained Baroud who was travelling best of all when switched to the outside by Pierre-Charles Boudot.
The Frankel colt hit the front the a furlong out and won by two lengths going away from Daryzan as Montreal weakened to finish fourth of the five runners.
Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Imad Al Sagar, said: “He’s been a slow maturing horse but he’s run better and better and improved again when he ran at Saint-Cloud.
“He went well in his last piece of work on Tuesday which was really encouraging.
“As a Group Two winner by Frankel he is something special and the options are becoming more rarified. So we will focus on next year and as he loves the fast ground it probably won’t be Longchamp.”
