Horse racing tips: Angus McNae's four Sunday selections

1.55 Curragh: Teresa Mendoza

She is effective in this grade and goes well at this track.

Teresa Mendoza has shaped well on a number of occasions this season without always getting much luck. At Ayr last time she was caught too far back and left with too much to do, but she did travel with zest throughout and suggested she is still in good form.

She has regularly been unlucky and often found trouble, but her only career win came here on debut over this six-furlong trip on similar ground and she’s been lightly-raced since.

Granted a clear passage, I can see her going very close here for Ken Condon who has enjoyed some high-profile wins this season.

3.05 Curragh: Maze Runner

Willie Mullins has won three of the last ten runnings of the Paddy Power Irish Cesarewitch and this 16/1 shot can provide him with another success.

Maze Runner is a useful hurdler, as evidenced by his win at Leopardstown in February off 125. Since then he has only run once, but shaped with promise on the Flat at Galway in July where he looked in need of the run in a race that was not the strong staying test that he wants.

This race looks like it has been a specific target and, off a generous mark of 76 and in a contest that is sure to be run at a good pace, he is worth supporting.

3.30 Goodwood: Mystery Fox

He remains a maiden but there was real promise in his Haydock run last time, suggesting that his turn is not far away.

Mystery Fox was well-supported and, ridden close to the pace, ran out a good second to the progressive Outgate. He is well drawn to attack from stall 2 and Silvestre de Sousa is the right jockey on board to employ front-running tactics.

Mystery Fox remains in Class 4 company here and, despite a rather harsh 4lb rise in the weights, looks sure to go well again.

4.40 Goodwood: Champagne Piaff

He’s useful and ran out a ready-enough winner time, and in a fast time despite not really handling the track at Epsom. He looks poised to run another big race here despite a 6lb rise in the weights.

I thought he did well at Epsom to run down the pace-setting Arenas Del Tiempo, who got his own way in front but was ultimately well-beaten. Champagne Piaff saw the trip out very strongly.

This ground will be softer than Epsom, but he won at Salisbury on soft ground this time last year so conditions should not be a concern. In a competitive handicap, he looks sure to go well.
