Feisty Gert scoops York pot

Gertmegalush took top honours in the opening race on John Smith's Cup day at York, despite running loose after unshipping his jockey in the paddock.The 25-1 shot cantered for two furlongs down the chute to the five-furlong start after giving Paul Hanagan a scare. However, the pair were reunited and all went well in the race as the James Bethell-trained youngster landed the John Smith's and R.A.F. Linton-On-Ouse Stakes by a length and a half from Kingdom Of Light.Hanagan, who had been injured when in the same parade ring only last month, said: "He whipped round first then I gave him a slap and I was down. I thought it was going to be one of those days, I couldn't believe that. It was deja vu after what happened to me at the last meeting."
