Gertmegalush took top honours in the opening race on John Smith's Cup day at York, despite running loose after unshipping his jockey in the paddock.
The 25-1 shot cantered for two furlongs down the chute to the five-furlong start after giving Paul Hanagan a scare. However, the pair were reunited and all went well in the race as the James Bethell-trained youngster landed the John Smith's and R.A.F. Linton-On-Ouse Stakes by a length and a half from Kingdom Of Light.
Hanagan, who had been injured when in the same parade ring only last month, said: "He whipped round first then I gave him a slap and I was down. I thought it was going to be one of those days, I couldn't believe that. It was deja vu after what happened to me at the last meeting."
