Five horses to follow at Newmarket on Friday

Andrew Balding’s progressive three-year-old looks likely to appreciate this return to a mile and a half after a fourth-placed finish in the Park Hill at Doncaster two weeks ago.

The daughter of Territories had previously run out a hugely impressive winner of the Listed Galtres Stakes at York’s Ebor Festival over this trip, taking her record to two wins from two starts over the distance.

The slight concern is that her two best efforts, which she has recorded on her last two starts, have both been on good to soft ground, but I am inclined to think she is just an improving filly. She certainly ran well enough earlier in the year on good to firm ground (finishing second on two occasions) to suggest conditions this week should not be a problem. 

Though she was sent off the 9-4 favourite at Doncaster last time, this looks a more winnable race, and it is possible a similar level of performance could be good enough.

Best odds: 22-1.

Ruby Moon is another big-priced filly who could be capable of outrunning odds of 22-1 in the Group Two Betway Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket on Friday. Her form figures aren't quite as attractive as the main protagonists at the head of the market, but she has some noteworthy form against talented rivals having gained plenty of valuable experience this season which should hold her in good stead.

Following a successful debut at Carlisle, the nicely-bred daughter of No Nay Never finished fourth in the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes on the July Course to subsequent four-length Group One winner Senorita Bonita. Group Two-winning Libertango was in second, with subsequent Listed winner Alwaysanangel in third, Jolivette, only narrowly denied by Nabati in the Mill Reef Stakes last weekend in fifth, and Salisbury Group Three winner Acclamation Star further behind in sixth.

The race has been working out exceptionally well and Ruby Moon was perhaps slightly unfortunate not to pose a bigger threat to Silent Beauty in a recent Group Three appearance at Ayr, finishing second to the eventual winner at the Scottish track. She has shown plenty of talent to date and, if replicating her previous effort at Newmarket, albeit on a different track, she could put in a bold bid.

Not very original, I know, but Talk Of New York really should take all the beating, and is probably one to add to any multiples on Friday.

Charlie Appleby's charge suffered a shock defeat (when sent off the 2-5 favourite) last time out, but was given too much to do in a messy race. 

He finished third behind Bow Echo in the St James's Palace Stakes prior to that, which is the standout piece of form here, and a reporduction of that performance would be good enough to score with a bit to spare.

There's also the chance he has further improvement on the horizon, given he's only had six starts, and this is an ideal opportunity for him to get back on track.

Fortitudine is a brother of nine-time Group One winner Rebel’s Romance and has made a flawless start – winning by 21 lengths on his Kempton debut before following up there. 

He’s a shorter strider than his sibling but he’s shown smart gate speed and his front-running victories have been achieved in times quicker than the PaceiQ Par. Leaders in 12f furlong races such as this have an Actual over Expected of 2.08.

Best odds: 7-2.

Go Rimbaud has won twice this season, and has generally been a consistent improver for the Gosden team over the summer. 

His latest win came over an extended mile, and his latest efforts over a slightly shorter trip seem to suggest he might be ready for a slight step up in trip, so nine furlongs could be ideal. 

A strong pace, which is not guaranteed, would be ideal, but the first-time blinkers applied last time seemed to help him finish a good second from a prominent position, so I expect Robert Havlin to adopt the same tactics here. He looks a solid option.
