STAR PERFORMER

I do try and avoid nominating a horse that has shown previous winning form in this section, but this week I feel the winning performance of CELERON in the Railway Stakes is worthy of recognition.
He’d looked impressive over the same course and distance when winning on his debut back in June and as a consequence was not without his supporters in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot.
However, the combination of being drawn on the unfavourable far side and a slow start meant he was facing an uphill challenge from the start and he was never able to get involved.
On Sunday he looked an entirely different proposition. He broke smartly under Oisin Murphy and raced powerfully just in behind the leading pair, as Carry The Flag, in first time cheekpieces, set overly strong early fractions.
Watch how Celeron landed the GAIN Railway Stakes on Saturday.
Approaching the two-furlong pole, he started to deliver his challenge and showed a good turn of foot to quickly draw to the lead, from where he stayed on powerfully, with a small shift to his left being the only blemish on what was a textbook performance.
His dam was a maiden winner over six furlongs, while his sire Mohaather was a top-class miler who signed off his brief, eight-race career with a stylish win in the Group One Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.
On this evidence Celeron looks to have the stamina for a mile next season, while he’ll almost certainly improve for a step-up to seven furlongs later this season. Connections hinted after the race that the National Stakes back at the Curragh would likely be his next assignment. That will of course demand more, but he shouldn’t be underestimated and looks a high-class colt.
Of the others, both Tribeca and The Scallionator deserve credit. The former chased a strong pace throughout and stuck to his task well to finish in second, he looks like this is as far as he wants at this stage but if placed smartly he could win a pattern contest over this trip.
The Scallionator has already had five starts this season, his sole win came over an extended six-furlongs and he shaped here as if a step up in trip would suit. He was the first to come off the bridle at the rear of the field, but stayed on grittily into fourth and in another stride he would have placed.

WINNERS IN WAITING

NORHAM
(Adam Kirby)
A stoutly bred colt out of Jumellea who gained one of her two career wins over 1m4f. By Ten Sovereigns, he made his debut as Chepstow over the minimum trip.
He showed good early speed, but lacked a change of gear as the pace quickened before sticking to his task well to finish in fourth. He will be of interest when stepping up to six furlongs.
CLIVE THE WRITER
(William Muir & Chris Grassick)
Made his debut over seven furlongs at Newbury, he settled well in a steadily run race but showed plenty of immaturity as the tempo lifted hanging to his left and looking in need of the experience.
He was only beaten three lengths in what shaped like a competitive heat. With the benefit of this outing, he might well be capable of far better in his next couple of runs.

NURSERY WATCH

HENLEY ON THAMES
(Kevin Philippart De Foy)
OR 79
This son of Persian Force has shown improved form in each of his three starts, all over five furlongs.
He was unable to reel in the winner, who made all on his latest start at Yarmouth, but his finishing effort suggested a step up to six furlongs would help.
This opening mark of 79 seems more than fair and he’ll be of interest when switching to handicaps.
YANKEEDOODLEDANDY
(J S Moore)
OR 62
A daughter of Land Force, she dropped back in trip for her third qualifying run at Bath last week.
She was ridden patiently towards the rear of the field, which was in contrast to her first couple of runs where she was ridden more prominently.
She settled well and finished off to good effect having lacked room as the tempo lifted. Her yard does well in nursery handicaps and she’d be of interest when returning to six furlongs in handicap company.
