Racing TV presenters and pundits were requested to highlight one horse for the Flat season in the magazine and my nomination
Galilean Quality won for the third time this term on Saturday.
Stepping up to 1m6f at Ascot, Karl Burke's classy three-year-old, who was taking on elders, was in touch with the leaders and nudged along to make headway over two-out.
The progressive notebook horse led inside the final furlong and kept on when challenged by Fireblade in the last one hundred yards; front two clear.
Galilean Quality hasn't stopped improving and could win again.
I wrote here last month:
Galilean Quality ran with enormous credit when beaten only four lengths in the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot. Karl Burke's highly regarded son of Teofilo raced wide in rear from stall sixteen but was making headway when hanging right over a furlong out. He kept on inside the final one hundred yards and was nearest at the finish. Galilean Quality, who was available at 66-1 in the morning, finished sixth at 22-1 and some bookmakers paid six places. He would have gone even closer granted a better draw. Exciting.
Scommessa Sicura also landed a touch for the notebook in the 7f fillies' maiden at Newmarket on Thursday. Andrew Balding's classy daughter of Cracksman made virtually all, despite being pestered and pushed along when the groups merged three-out.
She hung left before the furlong pole but asserted in the last one hundred yards.
A step up in trip and class is possible.
I noted here on 20th May:
Scommessa Sicura was beaten only a neck by hot favourite Musical Times in the 7f fillies' novice at Newmarket; front two clear. Leading, she was ridden a furlong out when challenged and went clear with the winner but was headed in the last one hundred yards. Scommessa Sicura will be handicapped now and this fine daughter of Cracksman is bred to improve, especially over further.
Trackers at the ready - six more for the notebook now...
Subscription
At Newmarket on Saturday, Subscription was very well backed in the 7f maiden but looked in need of the run.
Andrew Balding's well bred son of Night Of Thunder was prominent for a long way and finished only three lengths behind experienced warm favourite Haffner.
Subscription is held in high regard and related to winners; he's out of a Group-placed 1m4f /1m7f winner, so expect most improvement over further.
Glen Nevis
Also on this card, Glen Nevis ran well for a long way in the 7f handicap but faded in the closing stages.
Making his handicap debut off 77, Charlie Johnston's three-year-old son of Blue Point was receiving weight from elders but might do better giving weight in a lesser race.
Glen Nevis was beaten only half a length by experienced Bunyola Bay at Doncaster on debut and that horse is now rated 102.
He's exciting.
Watch: Dickensian was beaten only two lengths in the Listed City Walls Stakes
Dickensian
Across the card, Dickensian was beaten only two lengths when seventh in the Listed City Walls Stakes at York.
Kevin Ryan's three-year-old son of Pinatubo, who was taking on elders, was in rear and making headway when short of room from over a furlong out.
He kept on in the last one hundred yards and can remain competitive at this level.
Dickensian won a similar race over course and distance when coming from off the pace at the Dante Festival but was well beaten in the Palace Of Hollyroodhouse Handicap at Royal Ascot last time.

Sierra Belle
Sierra Belle made a very pleasing start when a very close second in the 6f fillies' maiden at Newmarket on Friday.
Ralph Beckett's classy daughter of Frankel dwelt at the start but made headway from rear over a furlong out.
She challenged in the last one hundred yards and split market leaders Acting Lady and Speed Of Sound at the line.
Sierra Belle is out of a 6f two-year-old winning half-sister to Group Three 6f juvenile winner Juliet Sierra.
She is sure to improve.
Watch: Sierra Belle finishes second at HQ
Calling A Star
An hour later on this card, Calling A Star was beaten less than a length in the competitive 7f three-year-old handicap.
Racing against colts and geldings, the quality daughter of Showcasing led but wandered around in the final furlong.
She lost two places in the last half-furlong and might do better dropping to 6f, especially in a fillies' race and/or against elders.
A brave winner over 6f at Windsor last month, Calling A Star is learning to settle.

Calico Blue
Back to Thursday's card at Newmarket, Calico Blue was narrowly denied in the highly competitive 6f three-year-old handicap.
Roger Varian's son of Calyx was prominent in the centre and led over a furlong out.
Keeping on, he was beaten only a neck by Jazl, who raced up the stands' rail.
Calico Blue was a close fourth in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse at Royal Ascot and deserves to get his head in front again.
