1.30 Haydock: Revelio
Revelio is a lightly-raced maiden, but has shown plenty of potential on his last three starts, most notably when stepped up to slightly further than today’s trip and plugging on well to be fourth at Newmarket last time out.
Tom Clover’s well-bred gelding hasn’t raced on soft ground, so his ability has to be taken on trust, but his Classic-placed dam was placed in a Group Three on heavy ground, so there are indications the going won’t be an issue.
Revelio will lack for nothing in the saddle, in fact he will have a big advantage over others in this field with Henry Callan (7 winners from last 20 rides).
4.49 Salisbury: Fleetwater
I backed this filly at big odds for an extra place in a big field handicap at Goodwood and she ran well, though not finishing close enough for me to get paid out. She will be among the outsiders for this, but may be able to outrun her odds once more.
Fleetwater won over this course and distance under David Egan, who regains the mount here and clearly gets on well with Stan Moore’s filly.
She has run a couple of good races on soft ground and at particularly stiff tracks, so conditions could suit her better than some rivals this afternoon.

5.00 Haydock: Nightsinwhitesatin
Nightsinwhitesatin is running for the fifth time off a mark of 79 despite not having managed to win a race off this mark.
It seems pretty conclusive that Ed Bethell’s mare is in the grip of the handicapper, but I believe she is worth one more roll of the dice as circumstances and prevailing conditions might well suit her here.
The four-year-old mare has finished runner up on four of her last five starts and may well lack a smart turn of foot, but equally, all of these races have been slowly run affairs, sometimes markedly so.
However, Nightsinwhitesatin did manage back-to-back wins last season and both were in races that were very well run. The pace forecast for this event is a strong one. One of those wins was also achieved on softer ground, so the going could well also assist her.
