Nic Doggett takes a close look at the 12 entries for Saturday's Group One BetMGM Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket and shares his verdict.
1 BLUE BOLT
Blue Point – Mayhem (Whipper)
T: Andrew Balding. Best Odds: 4-6
Has only suffered two defeats – and been beaten by two horses - in 10 starts since an underwhelming debut at Southwell back in April 2025, though one did come in this race when unable to reel in the enterprisingly-ridden Fallen Angel.
Has since won all five starts, matching the level of her Falmouth Stakes victory (by two lengths from Precise) when coming two and a quarter lengths clear of City Of Memphis in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown last time.
Has progressed in leaps and bounds this season, and is the clear one to beat as a result, with quick ground not a problem.
Can Blue Bolt confirm her Matron Stakes form with City Of Memphis and Fallen Angel? 2 CITY OF MEMPHIS
Sioux Nation – Decorative (Danehill Dancer)
T: Paddy Twomey. Best Odds: 6-1
Progressive filly who was late to the track and then asked a big question when a gallant fifth in last year’s Irish 1000 Guineas just 19 days after a winning debut at Cork.
Not seen until this April, where she beat the boys on her reappearance, and has since followed up in a Group Three at Leopardstown and the Group Two Lanwades Stud Stakes at the Curragh.
Took another step forward when doing best of those in behind Blue Bolt in the Matron, perhaps not ideal that she made her challenge on the far side after travelling well in midfield.
Entitled to come forward from that first start in nearly four months, and rates a serious danger to Blue Bolt as a result. Quick ground perhaps the only question mark.
3 FALLEN ANGEL
Too Darn Hot – Agnes Stewart (Lawman)
T: Karl Burke. Best Odds: 10-1
Experienced mare who won Group Ones in her first three seasons, with a hat-trick of top-level wins last term consisting of the Prix Rothschild at Deauville, Matron Stakes at Leopardstown and this race (comfortably, by two and a quarter lengths from Blue Bolt after dictating the pace throughout).
Not so good since, meeting with defeat on all three starts this season, though wasn’t able to get to the lead at Leopardstown last time.
Capable of bouncing back with a potential lack of rivals for the lead here, though may have preferred a little more rain in the forecast.

Night Of Thunder – Maid Up (Mastercraftsman)
T: Jane Chapple-Hyam. Best Odds: 25-1
Lightly-raced York listed winner last term who took her form up a notch when behind Blue Bolt on her first two starts – at Goodwood and Ascot – this season.
Showed a good attitude to land the Group Three Valiant Stakes back on the round course at Ascot in July, though wilted quickly on rain-softened ground when sent off favourite for the Atalanta Stakes at Sandown a month later.
The return to quicker going here will suit, and not without place claims, but will need to take another step forward.
Love Dynasty beat several of these rivals at Sandown last time 5 LOVE DYNASTY
Dubawi – Geisha Girl (Galileo)
T: Kevin Ryan. Best Odds: 40-1
Clearly hasn’t been the easiest to train, running and winning just once in each of her first two seasons, but has stood her racing better since.
Improved on her first two outings this term when springing a 33-1 surprise in the Atalanta Stakes, though runner-up Noche Clasica has since let the form down.
Testing ground appears crucial and she won’t get that here. Unlikely to feature prominently if pitched into this lofty grade for the first time.
6 PINA SONATA
Pinatubo – Moonlight Sonata (Galileo)
T: James Fanshawe. Best Odds: 33-1
A long way behind Fallen Angel at Deauville last year, and has finished behind both Love Dynasty (at Epsom) and winner Kon Tiki (at Ascot) this season.
Back to form when springing a 12-1 surprise in the Sceptre Stakes at Doncaster last time, finishing strongly dropped to seven furlongs for the first time.
Always well-thought-of by connections, who know plenty about improving fillies, but this might be asking a bit too much back up in trip.

7 CALENDAR GIRL
Advertise – Plucky Lass (Medaglia d’Oro)
T: Owen Burrows. Best Odds: 20-1
Progressive sort who won three of her four starts at two, culminating in a neck defeat of Mubasimah in the Group Three Oh So Sharp Stakes here.
Straight back into the swing of things on her belated return to action in the listed Dick Hern Stakes at Haydock in August, and then was far from disgraced when a close-up sixth behind Love Dynasty at Sandown.
This a big step up in class but has done very little wrong and should appreciate the return to quicker ground.
8 EVOLUTIONIST
Night Of Thunder – Model Guest (Showcasing)
T: Karl Burke. Best Odds: 50-1
Looked one to follow when a running-on third in the Fillies’ Mile at the end of last season, and proved that to be the case when landing a French Group Three on her return in April and then finishing second in the 1000 Guineas.
No-show in the Prix De Diane (up in trip) in June, but more encouraging signs behind Blue Bolt the last twice.
No obvious reason why she should reverse the form, though, unless she’s improved markedly for a two-month break.

Cracksman – Lunar Corona (Dansili)
T: Sir Mark Prescott. Best Odds: 25-1
Consistent filly who has run a lot of fine races in defeat but has proven a little hard to win with since landing her first two starts at two.
Best effort this term arguably her two and a quarter lengths front-running third to Blue Bolt in France, so even more frustrating that she couldn’t get the job done when filling the same position in the Atalanta Stakes last time.
Would be a shock winner, but no surprise if she were to hit the frame.
10 PRECISE
Starspangledbanner – Way To My Heart (Galileo)
T: Aidan O’Brien. Best Odds: 12-1
Won four of her five starts at two, including the Fillies’ Mile, and has since added the Irish 1000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes this season.
Unfortunately for her, has since bumped into Blue Bolt three times, meeting with defeat on each occasion but generally losing little caste in defeat, a comment that also applies to her three-parts of a length third against the boys in the Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deauville.
Stays a mile so strongly that it seems logical to think she might be a little tapped for toe if this becomes tactical as expected. Could potentially run in the Prix de l’Opera over two furlongs further on Sunday, instead.
The Verdict team examine Blue Bolt and Precise 11 SECRET OF LIFE
Pinatubo – Be My Gal (Galileo)
T: Ralph Beckett. Best Odds: 40-1
Lightly-raced, straightforward filly who was well supported when landing a Sandown listed contest from the front in July and then ran to a similar level when a length fourth to Love Dynasty in the Atalanta Stakes last time.
Much too early to assume that is her ceiling, and this quicker ground should suit if she’s as keen as she was last time, but would need to take a big step forward to feature prominently.
12 TRUE LOVE
No Nay Never – Alluringly (Fastnet Rock)
T: Aidan O’Brien. Best Odds: 14-1
Powerful filly who showed too much dash for Evolutionist when landing the 1000 Guineas in May, her second win at the track following a Cheveley Park Stakes win here the preceding September.
No match for stablemate Precise on her next two starts after her Classic win, and has consistently come up short at the very top level, including when four and three quarter lengths sixth behind Blue Bolt in the Matron.
Hopes pinned on a return to this venue, though, in truth, it’s just more likely that she was well placed and well trained early in her career against less physically developed rivals.
Verdict
Likely to feature the one-two – FALLEN ANGEL and Blue Bolt - from last year’s contest, Saturday’s race looks a stronger renewal with City Of Memphis – who split that pair in the Matron - thrown into the mix.
Connections may have preferred more rain for Fallen Angel, but prices as big as 10-1 look an overreaction for a mare who will have had this race on her radar for some time and could easily get an easy lead here (as she did 12 months ago).
Blue Bolt has done nothing wrong in a fantastic season, and her jockey Colin Keane is likely to be wise to the prospect of a tactical affair, but it’s also worth noting that she has been on the go for a long time and she faces a pair of rivals whose less intense campaigns may build to a crescendo here.
1 FALLEN ANGEL. 2 CITY OF MEMPHIS. 3. BLUE BOLT.
