Having been overshadowed on the opening day of the Tattersalls Book 1 Yearling Sale by Godolphin, Coolmore flexed their muscles in Newmarket on Wednesday when going to 4,000,000 guineas for a Frankel colt out of Shambolic.
Consigned by Newsells Park Stud, it is the third time in five years Shambolic has produced the goods with her first offspring Ylang Ylang – also bought by Coolmore – going on to win the Fillies’ Mile having been bought for 1.5m guineas, and her Siyouni half-brother Act Of Kindness making 3.7m guineas to Godolphin in 2024.
Bidding with White Birch Farm, Coolmore’s MV Magnier was not to be denied.
He told Tattersalls: “He’s a lovely horse and in fairness to Newsells they do a great job.
“They’ve bred a lot of good horses, including his sister, who we bought here a few years ago. She was a very good filly, she’s in-foal to Justify.
“Aidan (O’Brien) and dad (John Magnier) were here the other day, and they both liked him a lot. All the lads were happy to get him.”
Graham Smith-Bernal, owner of Newsells, said: “He looks like Frankel, and if he’s 10 per cent of what Frankel was I think the new owner will have done quite well. I wish them all the best.
“Of course, they (Coolmore) have already done well with the family through Ylang Ylang. In my book anyway, this colt is couple of notches up from her. We wish them all the very best.”
Earlier Richard Brown went to 1.4m guineas for a wildcard entry, a Frankel filly out of Middleton Stakes winner Queen Power.
“I thought she had everything; she had sire, pedigree, broodmare sire, the farm she was raised on, beautiful physical. I thought she looked exceptional walking around there,” said Brown.
“The depth of the page is exceptional. It’s pretty outstanding and it’s quite hard to get into those pedigrees. It’s a family that just keeps giving. We very much hope she’s a racehorse, but there’s a long-term future there as well.”
