Dave Nevison's Saturday tips: 25-1 Cambridgeshire pick plus other bets

Trilby, who has been fantastically consistent all season, ran another cracking race in the Ladbrokes Ayr Silver Cup last weekend when finishing a close second on the unfavoured near-side after being in the mix throughout. 

He performs even better at Haydock, especially when the ground is on the softer side, and goes particularly well for P J McDonald.

A low draw here, and a mark a pound lower than last Saturday, means pretty much everything is in his favour, and a good run seems almost certain. 

There will be an awful lot of sympathy for Ruth Carr’s Rousing Encore, who beat the near-side by a margin in the Ladbrokes Ayr Bronze Cup at Ayr last weekend, but he is 3lb higher here, and is up against a different type of sprinter, especially Angel Gabriel who, in particular, might have more upside than the exposed handicappers who raced at Ayr. 

Ralph Becket’s three-year-old returned fairly late this season after being gelded in the Spring, but ran well on his reappearance in June before, surprisingly, he was upped to seven furlongs for his next two starts, which didn’t prove the right move. 

He was dropped back to this trip last time out and, racing on softer ground, he won comfortably at Windsor. A 4lb rise for that looks lenient to me. 

There's a chance he may secure the lead from his high draw on the stands' side, and can make all again to score here.   

I was so impressed by Gavriel, who immediately jumped to favourite for this annual cavalry charge, after winning at Ascot last time that I could not include him in my picks here. 

The three-year-old son of Frankel is trained by John and Thady Gosden, and that probablaby gives him great credentials on its own, as comparisons to Halling, Pipedreamer and others come to mind. 

He comfortably beat Balzac, another improver who has already scored since that run, and a 4lb penalty definitely doesn’t reflect his rate of improvement. 

Gavriel has only had four runs, and is bred to be Group class plus will likely live up to that pedigree next season. However, for now, a mark of 99 is very lenient. 

Zennor Storm hasn’t won a race yet this season, but is my each-way pick against the favourite, plus my fancy of those drawn low who may, possibly, have a pace advantage on that side. 

The William Haggas-trained gelding has been pretty consistent in similar handicaps this season, only disappointing on soft ground on his penultimate start. He could be well suited by this small step up in trip, and will definitely benefit from the ground quickening up again in recent days. 

He may not have the upside of the favourite, but I can see him running well at chunky odds (he's 25-1, at the time of writing).
