2.03 Warwick: Woodstock City could be "very well in"
This may be a low grade 0-105 handicap, but it is definitely of above average interest for the grade. It is worth keeping an eye on, but I do feel that Woodstock City has more in his favour than most of his rivals.
He made his debut for Olly Murphy in late September and ran very respectably despite being forced wide. He hasn’t been seen since, but arrives here after a wind operation and is wearing a tongue strap for the first time which seems highly significant given Sean Bowen, who rides this afternoon, was on board then.
There could well be significant improvement to come and, with the handicapper having dropped him 1lb, he could be very well in.

After Handstands blew up at the entrance to the straight and then ran on well to be second in the Charlie Hall at Wetherby on Saturday I said to my colleague Nick Lightfoot that Pauling was going to be trainer to be with in November as I had seen so many of his yard’s runners go well, but looking like they needed their first run. Cue Sunday, the first day of the month, and Pauling has a 12-1 winner which I wasn’t on! Infuriating, but I will still be looking very closely at all the yards runners in the coming weeks.
Vive Le Reve is by far the most interesting runner in this low grade handicap chase. He is on[y a four-year-old, but he was an expensive purchase after winning over hurdles in France in November 2025. There is no doubt he was disappointing in three hurdles runs in this country and maybe took time to acclimatise to the Pauling regime (surprisingly not unusual for French imports), but did show enough on his final start to suggest he has a future.
He is off bottom weight for this chasing and handicap debut and I still think that he could well be running in the wrong grade here. If he takes to fences, he could run up a sequence.
3.22 Lingfield: Calshot Spit the class act
This six-year-old gelding is fit from a good recent effort on the Flat where he was second at Bath and he has dropped to a mark 1lb below that which he won off just 11 months and three hurdles runs ago.
He did run pretty well a couple of times after his win and he is running in a 0-100 handicap here which is the grade he is demonstrably able to win in and he could well be the class act and give away weight to some modest rivals.
A note from Dave
If anybody fancies a Xmas lunch with a racing theme please get in touch.
I have been a frustrated MasterChef contestant for years and started doing these Racing Lunches after my legs packed in and I can’t really go racing too often. They have gone down very well so far so this year I have decided to do host “A Bloody Good (Xmas) Dinners.”
I have been around long enough to have quite a few stories to tell and would to host a few of you for festive drinks, great food and enjoyable chat for a few afternoon’s in December. If you, your syndicate or owners group are interested in a slightly different Xmas celebration in central London please email me at info@thecoinstable.com
