Our tipster reflects on a busy weekend of Racing TV action and has four selections at Plumpton and Southwell to start the week.
1.00 Plumpton: Tom Taggle
Shaped promisingly on his chase debut at Worcester over an inadequate 2m4f, where he jumped soundly and made some good progress from the rear of the field before a lack of race-fitness appeared to show.
A winner over hurdles off just 3lb lower than this mark of 85, this step up in trip to 3m1f with a stiff finish should suit him well.
2.30 Plumpton: Let Him B
Is the only runner for Irish-based trainer Charles Byrnes on this card. He’s been in good form this autumn, finishing runner-up at Roscommon before winning by a wide margin at Cork.
He’s clearly suited by a nice surface and a sharp track and needs respecting for his shrewd trainer.

3.30 Plumpton: Cayman Dancer
The Moore team (now brothers Josh and Jamie) have been slow into their stride this season.
Cayman Dancer was given a lot to do from the rear of the field over this course and distance two-weeks ago but made some stylish progress before getting tired. With the benefit of that run behind him he can land this off a career low mark of 110.
3.45 Southwell: Inca
Has shown improved form since switching to this yard, winning his last two starts in ready fashion. The latest win came a week ago and he’s turned out quickly before the handicapper can reassess him on Tuesday (I’d envisage an 8lb+ rise in the ratings). By virtue of the fact that his win at Hereford was limited to conditionals and amateurs he also escapes a penalty.
He has to prove himself as effective going left-handed (his last two wins came going the other way) but that’s a minor concern.
He can reward a smart piece of race planning.

Weekend reflections
Unseasonably dry ground is prevailing in large parts of the country and is sadly resulting in some small fields and a fair amount of uncompetitive racing. Patience though is the order of the day, heavily watering now will only cause issues later in the season when the rain will no doubt come.
There can be no doubting that trainers have faced difficulties in preparing some of their horses for the start of the season, with many being unable to get on grass to do those all important bits of stronger work. Both Paul Nicholls and Ben Pauling were amongst the Saturday winners having been slightly slow to gather stride, add Philip Hobbs and Johnson White to that list and I think you’ve got three yards that will prove profitable to follow in November.
By some margin it’s Dan Skelton who has seemed to navigate the early weeks of the season best; finding safe ground to get novice chasers Sinnatra, Kabral Du Mathan and Talk To The Man valuable racecourse experience as well as picking up some nice races already.
Saturday saw much of the same as he sent a strong team to Wetherby.
Kateira had won the Mares’ listed hurdle in emphatic fashion last year when benefitting from a sub-par performance from Golden Ace and faced lesser opposition this time around, but was made to work hard, eventually prevailing by a neck from La Conquiere giving her trainer his fifth win in this race.
Take No Chances was a rare setback on the day, when he was unable to justify favouritism in the Grade Two Bet365 Hurdle. Strong Leader proved his affinity for a flat left-handed track when getting back to somewhere near his best to run out a gutsy winner having ended last season with a couple of poor efforts, but to my mind he’ll again prove vulnerable against stiffer opposition this season.
The feature race of the day, the Charlie Hall Chase, also went the way of Skelton thanks to veteran new recruit Pic d’Orhy. He’d been only narrowly defeated last year when carrying a Grade One penalty. The upside to a winless season meant that he wasn’t burdened with that penalty this time around. Despite racing exuberantly he dispatched the inferior opposition in the manner the ratings, and betting market, suggested he would, needing only to be nudged out from the last fence to win eased down.
It was great to see the older horse get another day in the sun but don’t get carried away with any ideas that this is yet another ex-Nicholls recruit that has been improved by a switch of stables. Runner-up Handstands has failed to deliver on what is in my view an over-hyped reputation many times before, while the third Riskintheground is rated just 146 and was only nine lengths away carrying 4lb more. Finding another winnable race will be far harder, but at the moment there is no trainer more likely to find that race than Skelton.
One for your Racing TV tracker
As a punter, I’m pretty conservative through the month of October, as I feel it pays to watch and see which yards are finding early season form, I do though watch more replays than at any other point of the season and my Racing TV tracker is working hard.
Top of my list from last week is Reinado. He capitalised on a lowly opening mark to win a couple of handicap hurdles last season, at Uttoxeter and Chepstow, showing on each occasion a liking for genuine winter ground. He made his seasonal return and chase debut at Worcester where he jumped soundly and travelled well before tiring late on. A mark of 105 over fences should prove eminently workable once the rain arrives.
