Ryan Moore has promised to keep the pounds off after his Breeders’ Cup feast in order to ride Virgin Bet November Handicap favourite Nobody Knows for his former weighing room pal Richard Hughes.
The former champion jockey, who got down to his lowest riding weight this year when doing 8st 8lb on Precise at Keeneland, has told Hughes he will not put up overweight on the well-backed three-year-old who is set to carry 8st 10lb in the feature event on the final day of the Flat turf season in Britain.
The Lambourn trainer admitted Moore’s booking adds further belief that the colt, an eye-catching fifth at York last month on his first start since April, could be well-treated ahead of Saturday’s big-race assignment.
“He (Moore) has been busy, but he has been riding well,” Hughes told Sky Sports Racing.
“Nobody Knows has 8st 10lb at the moment and Ryan can do that as he was doing that in America. I’m sure he would rather do it in America probably, but he said he would do it for us.”
Moore is riding at the top of his game as the season draws to a close having fired home all three of Aidan O’Brien’s winners in Keeneland – Sun Goddess, Haffner and Benvenuto Cellini.
Nobody Knows is a best priced 5-1 favourite for the traditional curtain-closing mile-and-a-half contest on Town Moor and the form case for him looks compelling, with a win on the all-weather at Wolverhampton in the spring followed by a creditable third at Sandown before his York comeback.
“He won over shorter trips earlier but that’s just because he is a good horse. We were handicapping him for the mile and a quarter handicap at Royal Ascot and then the ground went all summer for us,” Hughes added.
“That’s why he hasn’t been running. We minded him all year and he ran really well in York. It was a typical first handicap – he jumped OK, got squeezed out and didn’t know what to do. He was a boy against men that day so we had to drop him out the back and he finished really strong.”
