Qatar Racing British Champions Sprint Stakes

The sprint division is as open as ever. Although Almeraq and Comanche Brave command respect after last-time-out Group One wins, neither offers much value at the top of the market. The former is as short as 6-4 despite being likely to face very different ground from that at Haydock.
Further down the market, the one that catches the eye is MITBAAHY, who despite being seven years of age, is relatively lightly-raced over recent seasons.
Trained by Charlie Hills, who has won this race before, Mitbaahy has been a source of frustaration this season, but has signalled that there is a big race to be won with him if everything drops right.
Can Mitbaahy land an upset in the British Champions Sprint Stakes?
He missed the break in the course and distance Wokingham Stakes at the Royal meeting but did well to finish fifth, beaten just over two lengths by the rapidly progressive Double Rush.
He then ran a huge race at Glorious Goodwood where he finished third in the Stewards' Cup, faring best of those from a high draw and finishing first in his group.
The son of Profitable clearly goes best on fast ground, as he then came unstuck at Deauville in soft conditions later in August, but he bounced back to take an eye-catching second behind a former winner of this race in Kind Of Blue at Kempton last time out, running on well from the rear in a slowly run race.
Given his trainer mentioned the Group One Prix Maurice de Gheest as a potential target after he ran at Goodwood, he is clearly well regarded and there is every chance he could line up here.
If he does, he is fully capable of outrunning his massive odds of 80-1, particularly given his hold-up running style should be perfectly suited to a cavalry charge down the straight course at Ascot.

British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes

Francis-Henri Graffard is no stranger to success at Ascot.
There is a firm favourite heading this mile and a half Group One, with Kalpana a best-priced 5-2 after a creditable fifth in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. She does have the best form in the race and has won this for the past two years, but she had a very tough race when only narrowly winning the Yorkshire Oaks, plus had another hard race on Sunday at Longchamp.
Preference at this stage is for fellow Juddmonte homebred SUNLY, available at 6-1, who is surely going to bag a Group One at some stage judged on her brilliant runs in defeat this season.
After winning on her seasonal debut, she has finished behind Aventure in the Prix Corrida, Calandagan and Cualificar in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, and then Friendly Soul and Pink Panthera in the Prix Vermeille.
Francis Graffard’s filly really ought to have won that race, but she stumbled at the start and was badly hampered at a crucial stage, yet was still only beaten a length by the winner, who finished fourth in the Arc on Sunday.
Originally bound for the Arc herself after that near-miss, connections opted to pitch Sunly in against her own sex in the Prix de Royallieu on Saturday where she looked the winner, only to be ran down late on by Fairy Glen, whose ride Mickael Barzalona was handed a two-day suspension for overuse of the whip.
Connections are undoubtedly keen to win a top-level contest with this valuable broodmare prospect, and this looks a great opportunity for her to end her run of bad luck.

Queen Elizabeth II Stakes

An open-looking renewal of the £1.1m mile Group One is headed by Rayif after he posted a career best to win the Prix Jacques Le Marois when last seen in August.
There is not much between most of these at the top of the market on the figures though, and the race was won by a 100-1 shot last year, so it might pay to look away from the obvious contenders who have similar form lines and are all very capable of beating each other.
Aidan O’Brien reported this week that his Prix du Jockey Club and Eclipse hero CONSTITUTION RIVER could be supplemented for this, and if he does line up, it is hard to see him going off anywhere near the 8-1 he is currently available at.
A step down in trip looks likely to suit Constitution River.
The son of Wootton Bassett is hugely talented and was sent off at relatively short prices in both the Juddmonte International and Irish Champion Stakes, but looked undone by a lack of stamina at the business end of both races.
A stiff mile at Ascot should be right up his street and he could be the most talented horse in the race. It is worth remembering he was impressive over seven furlongs twice last year, so he is not short on speed. With Gstaad looking like he is crying out for further, this switch of targets for the Ballydoyle duo looks very possible.

Qatar Racing Champion Stakes

Ombudsman bids to go one place better in the Champion Stakes this year.
Five-year-old Calandagan is undoubtedly one of my favourite horses in training, particularly after his impressive win in this race 12 months ago, but he has not been in quite as scintillating form this season and he has a three-month layoff to overcome here. His main target looks to be defending his Japan Cup title, and he will also be without regular rider Mickael Barzalona at Ascot this year.
Preference, therefore, is for four-time Group One winner OMBUDSMAN. John and Thady Gosden's colt successfully defended his Prince of Wales's title at Royal Ascot, winning by four lengths from Minnie Hauk and almost six lengths from dual Arc hero Daryz.
Things did not go to plan at York in the Juddmonte International, but I suspect he would be ridden differently if William Buick had his chance again and he was a shade unlucky not to finish closer to the winner.
Given his liking for Ascot, this looks to have been his target, and aside from Calandagan who has had a late summer/early autumn break, many of his rivals in this race have had hard races over the last month. He looks a fair price at 3-1 and sets a high standard.
