Good things come to those who wait, as trainer Harry Derham demonstrated when saddling his first Grade One winner at Punchestown in April.
Victory for Le Frimeur in the Channor Real Estate Group Novice Hurdle was a breakthrough moment for the Boxford handler, in just his fourth season as a trainer.
However, that victory aside, the former jockey, who will keep his big race winner over hurdles again this term, believes his form figures domestically, while acceptable, could have been better.
A total of 53 winners, which included two Grade Two level, in Britain might have been slightly down on the previous campaign, however a new personal best domestic prize money total of £851,542 and 20 per cent strike are figures not to be sniffed at.
Injuries prevented Derham from running some of his smarter prospects at the major festivals in the spring, but with everything now firing back on all cylinders, along with some interesting new additions to his team, it would come as no surprise should he raise the bar again.
Derham said: “I thought until Punchestown it was probably a B minus season. I was slightly down on numbers, and my reflections were that I was probably a little hard on the horses through the autumn. As a result some of my better horses didn’t make it to the spring.
“We had some nice winners, and we had a better quality of winners, which we were trying to achieve. Domestically the season wasn’t as good as I would have liked it to be, and crucially it wasn’t as good as I thought it should have been, so I’ve taken a lot of learning from that.
“Finishing with a Grade One winner was massive, and that was a big moment which I was very proud of.
“A lot of those horses that didn’t make the spring were young horses so it wouldn’t have hurt them to have some time off. Approaching this season I think we have got some pretty good prospects.”
CAVE BRIDGE
“He got a little bit jarred up at Wetherby when he won on Charlie Hall Chase day. I see him as a chaser, but we are going to start him over hurdles.
“He is back in and everything is going well with him. I think he can go up in trip eventually to two and a half miles.
“What he has achieved so far I don’t know, but going up in trip with him I think will help him progress.”
CLONDAW PARK
“She is a good mare. Last season was a real mess. She unseated the first time out, which was no one’s fault. She was declared to run on New Year’s Day, but it was off. It was just a really difficult season for her.
“I was never going to race her much last season, but once it went wrong the first time out it was just unsatisfactory. She finished third behind Charisma Cat at Chepstow on her final start.
“She got tired that day on bad ground. I said to her owners then the best thing we can do is not race her again this season, and I think that will pay off.
“She is not the easiest as she takes a bit of management to keep the weight on, but I do think she is decent.
“I threw her in the deep end the first time out last year so we will just start off in a mares’ maiden hurdle and find our way with her. I think she has got a good engine.
“I think she has more than enough pace for two miles for the time being, but she will stay further.”
CRISTAL D’ESTRUVAL
“Sadly he picked up a small injury at Carlisle, but we could have made the spring at Punchestown if we really pushed him, however we thought that was madness.
“I personally think he is a horse with enormous ability. You only have to look at the form of his first race last season where he had Baron Noir and Bossman Jack in behind him.
“I do think he is good, but he is lightly raced so he needs some experience as essentially in his second race no one really took him on.
“We might run him in hurdle and then go over fences, but if he is going to go for some of those Grade Ones over fences in the spring, which I think he is of that quality, then probably chasing is the way to go with him first up.
“His dam was a two miler, and I do think he will stay further, but I’m not in a rush to do that.”
CRYSTAL DOURO
“He is a nice four year old. He will run in bumpers this season, but we won’t be rushing him. “He is a raw horse that is half-brother to Riskintheground. He already looks like a chaser. If we got two bumper runs into him this season I would be happy.
“Riskintheground has progressed with time and racing, and Crystal Douro will be a similar type. He is a big lad so he will just want a bit of time.”
CRYSTAL VOYAGER
“He will take loads of time, but he is a beautiful horse. His full brother won a point-to-point first time out as a five year old.
“We won’t be in a rush with him, and he might not run until after Christmas. I wouldn’t be surprised if he only had one, maybe two runs this season, but he is a smart horse.”
FINAL VERDICT
“She is a nice Jukebox Jury filly that was second in her only point-to-point start at Monksgrange in March under Rob James.
“We got her from the Aintree Sale. Although she only finished second in her point-to-point start we thought she was the mare to take out of that race.
“She will run in bumpers this season, but it wouldn’t surprise me if she didn’t start until Christmas.”
JACKIE HOBBS
“She got a brilliant ride to finish fifth at a big price at the Cheltenham Festival and three weeks after that at Fairyhouse in the Grade One she was probably just feeling the effects of that run. I didn’t go home from Fairyhouse disappointed though.
“There is a Listed hurdle over two miles and five furlongs at Kempton Park in November to start off her in.
“Three weeks later there is a Listed hurdle over three miles at Doncaster, which will be a massive objective.
“I think three miles could just improve her if you look at her point-to-point form with Holloway Queen.
“Those two races will tell us whether we can run in better races in the spring or drop back into handicaps.”

“The intention is to start her in the Listed Houghton Mares’ Chase up at Carlisle. Her big target this side of the new year is the Grade Two Yorkshire Silver Vase up at Doncaster in December.
“She is a good solid mare that did well to win a Listed chase last season. I thought she got an exceptional ride in the Lady Proctectoress.
“I think we have got nearly as much out of her in terms of progression, but if we can get her back to that level then she could easily win another one of those good mares’ only chases as she is a sound jumper, and she tries very hard.
“She is a good solid mare, and she is lovely to train.”
JEM’S LILY
“She is one of the few horses that I look at their mark and think that she is quite a bit better than that potentially.
“She is a bit difficult to ride in a race, and I thought she was a two and a half miler last season. She pulled over that trip the first time out, but she ran well and finished third.
“She got an injury at Kempton Park in her last run last season. It wasn’t massive, but she just needed a month quiet. We said we would keep her as a maiden for this season with a handicap mark. I would love to get her qualified for the EBF Mares’ Final at Newbury.
“She does actually want two and a half miles, but at the moment she thinks she is Battaash. “With a bit of racing, and if the ground came good in the spring, I think she could be the type of horse that would progress quite well.”
JULIO COOLIO
“She is a nice mare that will go hurdling this season. We have been patient with her as her sister didn’t start winning until late on.
“I thought her debut was good at Ludlow. It was just the lack of experience that beat her. She has got plenty of ability and she is worth following.”
JUST ENNEMI
“We bought him back at the David Maxwell dispersal sale, and I’ve not lost any faith in this horse. Last season was difficult as it was a stop start one. It just didn’t go right for him.
“I do think that he has got ability. He will go staying handicap hurdling this season. I think I have got all things I needed to get sorted with him.
“That three mile handicap hurdle division can be contested by some exposed horses, whereas I don’t think he is fully exposed.”
KLUB DE REVE
“He will go chasing this season. He picked up a small injury in the Dovecote, which was frustrating, but he just meant he needed a bit of time, but he is fine now.
“I think that he is progressing as I thought his last two runs were really good as he was getting the hang of it.
“He showed enough pace to quicken well at Kempton Park last time out. I would love to get two runs into him before the Wayward Lad as that would be my first half of the season plan with him.
“If I can start him in a good beginners' chase in early November to get experience that would be great, and if he won great, but in an ideal world I want to run him in two beginners’ chases.
“I didn’t school him over fences in the spring, but he is a point-to-point winner. Paul (O’Brien) has ridden him in all his races and doesn't think chasing will be a problem. I’m very hopeful for him and I think the best is yet to come.”
LE FRIMEUR
Le Frimeur won the Grade One Channor Real Estate Group Novice Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival.
“It was amazing over in Punchestown, but we thought he would go well otherwise we wouldn’t have taken him over there. He did more than we anticipated. He stayed very well and showed a lot of class. To do that on his third race was extraordinary.
“JJ Slevin felt that going three miles was the right thing to do. I was really happy to go with what he thought as he knows him best. We literally spent no time in making that decision as he said that was the best fit for him.
“He will stay hurdling this season. We talked about it a lot, and the decision was made as he is only five and he has only had three races. He is a young horse with everything in front of him.
“We will start him off in the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury at the end of November and go from there.
“You would love to go from there on to a Long Walk. We just think that it is an open division without a stand out horse.”
LOVER DESBOIS
“I think he is quite a pacey horse. I would like to start him at the Coral Gold Cup meeting at Newbury. We have got to him jumping as he has not loved his schooling, but he will get there.
“I would love to get to that maiden hurdle at Kempton Park around Christmas time which Klub De Reve won last season. He is a talented horse, which has got pace.
“He is definitely the best bumper horse I’ve trained in my career by a long way. He needs to do that over hurdles now, but I think he has quite a lot of ability.”
MOSSY FEN ROAD
“He will either run in something like a Greatwood Hurdle or a Gerry Feilden or go straight over fences. I think the worst mistake I made of all last season was probably running him up at Musselburgh.
“He trapped his epiglottis, which obviously got him beat. I’m just wondering how competitive the two mile hurdle division will be this season. Would a Greatwood or Gerry Feilden tell you that you could run in a better race over hurdles.
“I think probably what we will do is run him in a real good hurdle race as that will tell us if we have any business running in Graded hurdles or should we be going for a beginners’ chase at Christmas.
“What he did at Chepstow was impressive. Whether it has to be on his terms a little bit, I’m not sure, but he is a talented horse.”
NORN IRON
“He really progressed over fences last season. I thought Punchestown was a career best by some way. He could have a prep run in a hurdle race before, but the Paddy Power Gold Cup will be his first big target.
“I think he will end up winning one of those good two and a half mile handicap chases this season, but I don’t know which one it will be.
“I personally think the December Gold Cup at Cheltenham could be a good option for him as I think the track will suit really well.
“Chasing has really improved him, but I had probably been running him over the wrong trip as two miles was probably a bit sharp for him as two and a half miles suited him much better.”
ONE HORSE TOWN
“I personally think he massively over-achieved, and I can say that as I have told his owners, who are all in agreement.
“The one race he has got a legitimate chance of winning is the Masterson Holdings Hurdle, which Givemefive won two years ago.
“He ran a great race on the Flat at Salisbury, which I specifically ran him in to get him spot on for Cheltenham. I make no apology for the fact that he will be razor blade fit for Cheltenham later this month.
“Where he goes after that I don’t know as after that it might be a bit of a struggle for him. If he wins at Cheltenham it is almost job done for the season.”
PANTILE’S GIFT
“He won over ten furlongs for Jack Morland on the all-weather and he has taken to jumping particularly well. I think he is a grand juvenile and we will get him going in November.”
PURE CARBON
“I was really happy with him last season and chasing definitely made him a better horse. He will probably go up to Aintree at the beginning of November for a two mile handicap chase.
“His big target this side of Christmas is a two mile handicap chase on Coral Gold Cup day at Newbury.
“The reason why I think he will be successful in these races is that you can drop him in, ride him cold and come with a nice run.
“He is a good jumper, but he never wins by far. He has always got a bit in his pocket. I think the best is still in front of him.”
QUEEN ALICE
“She is a half sister to Queens Gamble. She finished third in a bumper at Fairyhouse on her debut in the spring.
“We are going to run her in a Listed mares’ bumper at Cheltenham in November. I don’t see any downside to running her a good bumper first time up.
“Once she has run in that it will tell me do I save her for Graded bumpers in the spring or run her in a mares’ maiden hurdle at Christmas time.”
RADIANT WALK
“He is an unraced horse by Walk In The Park that we picked up at the Arkle Sale last summer. I’m an enormous fan of him, but we have still to make any real plans yet at this stage of the season.”
ROCKSON PIEL
“He is a junior hurdler that I like. I think he is quite smart and I’m very pleased with him. He came from the Arkle Sale as a two year old. He is a Goliath Du Berlais that is quite forward and he will start in junior hurdles. I really like him.”
SEVEN JOYS
“She is a daughter of Papagana, who was a dual Listed winner and Grade One placed for Oliver Sherwood. She is by Walk In The Park and is a homebred that Mr Burke sent to me. “She is one that will run in bumpers this season, but I think she is potentially above average.”
SOLITARY MAN
“He is rated one hundred and thirty eight which means you can pretty much run in any one of those valuable handicap chases off that mark. He will start at Cheltenham in the middle of December in an eighty thousand pound handicap chase there.
“He will go straight there and he is one that we will run at all the spring festivals. He is eight years old, but I would like to think there is plenty of fun to be had with him.
“That race at Cheltenham was won last season by Three Card Brag and this lad has literally the same sort of profile. Hopefully he will be a good fun horse.
“He could run in a Cross Country Chase or an Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival in the spring.”
TEDDY BLUE
“He has been a good horse since joining us. He could start off up at Aintree in the Old Roan. “I was absolutely flabbergasted at how he was put up seven pounds after his run in the Oaksey Chase at Sandown Park on the final day of the season.
“That will make life difficult for him as he was winning handicaps by short margins.
“He will end up running in all those good handicaps over two and a half miles I suspect throughout the season.”
TERRANO
“He could just be a quietly improving horse, but I’m not going to push him. He was very immature last season, and we gave him a break in the autumn as he wasn’t training well.
“We just gave him a run at Hexham in the spring, literally for experience, as he had been in training since January.
“There is a race at Punchestown, which is an Albert Bartlett sponsored race over two and a half miles, for nought to one hundred and thirty rated horses. If he got into that off a sensible weight that would suit me well.”
THE BURREN MAN
“He won up at Carlisle last season, but he then ran at Ascot and it was an absolute disaster. He just pulled too hard and gave himself a horribly hard race so I just turned him away after that race. I saw no benefit to running him again.
“He is very much a chaser, but his biggest issue is that he has to settle. Off his mark he is well-handicapped, but he does need to settle.
“I’m hoping that chasing will slow him down a little bit and give him something to respect a bit more.”
VIYANNI
“He has just been plagued with small problems so we have had to be super patient with him. “He needed the run on the Flat at Salisbury recently very badly, but we will give him another Flat run before we go back over hurdles.
“The target for him would be to get him back for the conditional jockeys’ race at the November Meeting at Cheltenham. I think he will improve for going up in trip this season.”
WESTERN MONKEY
“I would love to start him in an introductory hurdle as he is short on experience. I think is a horse with decent ability.
“He got sore shins after running at Haydock Park last season, which was odd for a horse of his age, but we just left him alone and I think he has improved quite a bit.
“If I can’t run him in an introductory hurdle we will have to go straight into a handicap, but he will need experience in them.
“I think we will try and end up in some Pertemps qualifiers this season. The Pertemps qualifier at Wincanton on Boxing Day would float my boat with him.”
