Rossa Ryan: inside track on my rides in the Fillies' Mile and Cesarewitch

Jockey Rossa Ryan believes Rogue Passion would be “vying for favouritism” if she was trained by Aidan O’Brien in the Group One bet365 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket tomorrow, Dubai Future Champions Friday.
The daughter of Sioux Nation showed promise on her first two starts in maiden company at Catterick and Carlisle before coming good on her third start when an easy winner of a novice contest back at Carlisle in August.
However, it was on her most recent appearance that the Ed Bethell-trained filly truly showed how good she is when she travelled to France and landed the Group Two Prix d'Aumale at Longchamp on September 6th. Partnered by Ryan for the first time and stepping up to a mile, she defeated Amusingly by a neck. The runner-up went on to frank the form in the best way possible when landing the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac back at Longchamp on Arc Day.
Sponsor bet365 currently have Godolphin’s unbeaten Musical Times as the 4-7 Favourite for tomorrow’s £500,000 feature, with Rogue Passion on 4-1.
Speaking on a Zoom call arranged by The Jockey Club today, 26-year-old Ryan said: “I am feeling good about tomorrow. Obviously, her form has worked out well. The Godolphin filly was obviously impressive in Newmarket, but we couldn't have as strong a form going into tomorrow with our filly.
“I'd imagine any bit of rain that's come has just loosened the ground up, which would suit her well. She's not the biggest, but she's all there and she's compact with a good low centre of gravity, so she should be well balanced down the hill.
“She's probably a filly that's happy dropping right in and has a good turn of foot. She gets a mile, but she's quick enough for six furlongs. She is ideal, really.”
As to the step up in class tomorrow, the jockey added: “We will find out if she's a Group One filly tomorrow, so let’s see. She's got the right form, and I'd say if she was trained by Aidan O'Brien and Coolmore-owned, she'd be vying for favouritism. It's a great position to be in.”
Reflecting on her success in France last time out, Ryan said: “At Longchamp, she went in there at a good price (22.8-1), but I was looking through her form, and her Carlisle form is actually very good. It's such a stiff uphill climb in Carlisle and you have to stay well. And I think literally when she won her maiden, the second and third, the following week after she won in Paris, both went out and bolted up.
“To be honest with Ed, he left it to me at Longchamp, and it was more a case of dropping her in. Everything opened up, but when I got that gap and it came, Colin (Keane, rider of Amusingly) got first run on me and my filly picked up well through the line well. My first words to Ed were she's a filly that has enough speed for six furlongs but stays the mile well. I think the biggest thing in Newmarket will be she just needs to relax early on.”
Rogue Passion is owned by Rogues Gallery Racing and on Dubai Future Champions Day (Saturday 10th October) Ryan will don their familiar red and white silks once again when he partners the James Owen-trained Kirchner. The four-year-old Pinatubo gelding is currently second favourite for the £175,000 contest and has enjoyed a productive season with victory in the Brown Jack Handicap at Ascot and a good second in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle.
Ryan said: “James’s horses are flying, and I was booked the week before last. They are hopeful for a big run, and I think the stretch out to two miles, two furlongs will suit him.
“Obviously you'd be aware of some of the top Jump trainers running horses in it, and I know Emmett Mullins is coming over with two and Joseph (O’Brien) has got one in it, with Ryan Moore booked to ride it for JP, so you'd obviously have to have a second look at them, but of the English-trained runners, my horse looks solid.
“The Cesarewitch is a race that develops a long way from home. I wouldn't be too concerned about the draw (3), depending on what's drawn low with me. It will depend where the pace is coming from and where we position ourselves. It’s a race that develops a long way out and it will open up things if he can travel strongly for me.
“By the time we go down to the start and come back, it's four miles and four- it is a Grand National! They tend to go quick because for the first mile you're basically running downhill at a steep decline. You know, you jump off the first three furlongs, you're fine. And then they run downhill and up a little bit and down again. And then when we get to the bend, you kind of have to be where you need to be. You kind of need to be in the position you want to be in without using too much gas. And then after that, the race develops from a long way from home and they come in waves. You need a lot of luck in it too.”
